Scoliosis, known as spinal curvature, is a disease with many species, the cause of which is unknown. Scoliosis which prepares the ground for serious diseases beyond physical deformity should not be neglected especially from an early age.
Scoliosis, which is defined as the right or left spine of the spine and decreases the quality of life, can be born congenitally as well as in childhood. Avcılar Hospital Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Dr. Müjgan Lahut, the name of the modern age, frequently heard questions about the scoliosis of the disease.

What is Scoliosis?

The word ı scoliosis ’comes from the Greek word, skoliosis‘ and means gel bending, bending, stretching Sk. Straight and vertical line in the right or left side of the healthy spine system is called scoliosis tilting. This curvature; it can be in the neck, back or waist area or at the joints of them. These curvatures have an elongated farklı C ğ or an elongated ’S‘ shape, which can sometimes be accompanied by different axis curvatures. In these cases; kyphoscoliosis, rotoscholyosis or kyporotoscoliosis can also be seen.

So, how can people notice if they are scoliosis?

In fact, a careful observation; the shoulders are not on the same line, one shoulder is higher than the other, the shoulder blades are more standing on one side, the head does not stand in the middle, the pelvis and hip are higher on one side, the rib cage and ribs are one-sided, It can be noticed through the case that the opening is wider on one side.

What causes scoliosis in children?

Scoliosis may develop due to genetic and environmental factors. Almost 80% of scoliosis occurs in mild or moderate levels without a specific cause. The risk of being seen in other family members is high. Genetic muscle damage and cerebral palsy may also occur with or without spina bifida (due to failure of the spinal cord in embryogenic life as a consequence of the formation of the structure of the spinal cord). Scoliosis can often occur due to postural disorder, muscle imbalance, transient muscle spasm, or painful conditions without disrupting the backbone structure. In such cases, when people sit, the curvature takes a proper shape. Non-structural scoliosis occurs mostly due to the different length of the leg. If this is easy to detect, the patient may undergo unnecessary scoliosis surgery.

The cause is unknown but are there differences? 80% of the scoliosis is idiopathic; So the reason is unknown. There are four types of idiopathic scoliosis; Infantile 0-3 years, what we call juvenile; age 3-9 years before puberty, Adole-san; from puberty to maturity, 10-18 years old, adults 18 years and older ...

The diagnosis and follow-up of scoliosis is very important, especially in adolescence, because the degree of curvature increases rapidly during puberty. In fact, the incidence of girls and boys is not very different in early ages, but as a result of the very fast maturation process, the scoliosis angle increases and becomes more noticeable in girls. Scoliosis does not progress after stopping growth, but osteoporosis or muscle damage and weaknesses may increase the angle.

What is the angle of scoliosis, how is it measured?

The graph of the patient's entire skeleton, with a standing soft dose, helps us evaluate this angle. This angle calls the ’cobb angle Bu. For babies, a scale called scoliometer can be used without a beam. If the measured angle is greater than 7, scoliosis is accepted. An experienced physician can make this decision with an examination.

What is the importance of angle?

Over ten degrees of curvature is called scoliosis. In the range of 20-25 creek-ce, special 3D corsets are required for the child. A 10-degree scoliosis angle correction is required in a radiograph obtained with a well-prepared and appropriate corset. If it is above 45-50 degrees, it requires operation.

How scoliosis affects our health?

Scoliosis increases the risk of discopathy and radiculopathy in different anatomical structures, developing back pain, other than cosmetic disorder. Bumps in the chest can disrupt lung capacity and breathing physiology, and may pave the way for some cardiac and circulatory disorders.

What do you do in physical therapy and rehabilitation processes for scoliosis?

Detailed physical and neurological examination of the child is performed. The type and angle of the scoliosis (cobb angle) is determined. The necessary exercise program is prepared by taking into consideration the age and growth rate (risser sign) findings of the child. Regular follow-up and scoliosis angle is evaluated at frequent intervals. It is necessary to foresee the problems that may develop in the secondary and make necessary measures.

How do you plan exercise programs?

From the long muscles present on both sides of the vertebras, the muscle in the inner part of the curvature due to scoliosis becomes shorter, and the muscle on the opposite side remains long and weak.
